There are lots of scholarships, bursaries and grant schemes on offer for students who need extra support to pay for their course. These can vary by university and country so it’s important to do your research.
A scholarship might cover the entire cost of your tuition, or it might be a one-time award. Either way, it’s worth researching applying for, because it’ll help reduce the cost of your education. Also don’t forget there could be scholarships opportunities available once you’re at university. Don’t forget to keep your eye out.
Merit Based/Academic based: Scholarships might be awarded based on academic achievement or on a combination of academics and a special talent, trait, or interest.
Needs-based: due to financial need. International students need to do their research on each university to check eligibility.
Category based: There may be certain scholarships if you come from a certain background - a talent in sports, ethnic-minority, military background etc.
National: often for the most academically able with strong service/extra curricular activities, such as the HKSES in Hong Kong.

Automatic consideration vs. separate application
For some scholarships, you don’t have to do anything, they’ll base it on the strength of your application, others may require a separate application which could include a new personal statement or essay, transcripts and references. For applications that need school support, students should contact their HE and Careers counsellor to let them know their intention to apply at least two weeks before the deadline.
Although the school will support scholarship applications by providing documents such as transcripts and reference letters, it is up to each individual student to research and apply on their own behalf.
